The second weekend was filled with activities organized by Remote Year to get to know the local area better. I chose the track with adventure 🙂
We met one of the women (all from Croatia) who made up the first all-women group to climb Mt Everest.
Saturday, we went on a bike tour to visit Ivan Meštrović’s house, go cliff jumping (I only watched 🙂 ) and bike up Marjan Hill.
^Meštrović received the award for best sculpture at the International Exhibition at Rome in 1911, where Klimt received the award for best painting that year. Everything in the house, including furniture, is designed by Meštrović.
^The group imitating the Persephone sculpture.
This isn’t the exact cliff we (they) jumped from, but looked very similar …
Sunday we went whitewater rafting … somehow no pictures of going through the whitewater, but it wasn’t that bad (thank heavens, because it was my first time). Then again, I was in the boat with the guide as steer-er, so we didn’t fall out until we wanted to.
Then, we headed to a local farmer’s house for lunch.
After eating
soparnik and
Dalmatian peka, the couple made us a whole soparnik to take home! And, with the meal, there was home made wine and schnapps for afterwards (which was needed, as we all ate so much).
We are in the province of
Dalmatia, where Dalmatian dogs come from.
During the week, we went out for a “ladies night” and discovered a jazz bar in the house of Croatia’s Shakespeare, Palača Marulić.
Also at some point, I visited the bell tower. Where I discovered that I suffer slightly from vertigo. There aren’t guard rails everywhere here – more on that in the next post about driving through the mountains of Bosnia in the pitch black …
But for now, some photos of Split from up high:
In the next 2 photos, you can see how the old walls are integrated into the city. I believe they are from Roman times:
And finally, the climb up. Note that those are very thing railings and there is just air on the other side …
All these activities were in one weekend …
